Service Lane Matrix Builder

Fixed-fee estate & elder law practice mix decision tool

Step 1: Choose your service lines

Select the services you want to evaluate. You can rename items or add additional services.

Tip: Keep names short—labels are easier to read on the matrix. Long names will still appear in hover details.

What this tool does

  • Client Pull = how likely prospects recognize the need and seek help (importance + urgency).
  • Lawyer Fit = your preferences and operational fit (client contact, court time, predictability, etc.).
  • Margin Potential = ability to deliver profitably at fixed fee (scope control, delegation, friction).
  • Confidence = data-backed vs best estimate (solid vs dashed outline).
You are building a practice portfolio. The matrix produces an action decision: Scale, Educate, Partner, or Avoid.

Step 2: Score each service line

Use the sliders (1–5). If you want a more quantitative estimate, turn on “Use calculator” to compute and map margin.

Selected
3
1 = rarely recognized / low urgency; 5 = obvious, urgent, high-stakes (clients seek help quickly).
3
1 = you dislike it or it breaks your delivery model; 5 = energizing, aligned, predictable enough to package.
3
You can score manually, or turn on the Margin Calculator below to compute and map margin % → score.
Margin Calculator (optional)
Estimates profit and margin using your assumptions. When enabled, the calculator sets the Margin Potential score automatically.

%
Default thresholds: 15, 30, 45, 60. If margin % is below the Score 2 threshold, it maps to Score 1.
“Best estimate” renders as a dashed outline on the chart.

Step 3: Matrix view

Hover a bubble for details. Adjust thresholds and lane labels if desired.

Matrix settings

3
Typically 3. Raise to be more selective; lower to be more inclusive.
Bubble position = Pull / Fit. Bubble size = Margin potential. Dashed outline = estimate.

Step 4: Export and share

Download the matrix as SVG (best for print/layout) or PNG (best for slides). You can also export/import JSON.

Tip: SVG is ideal for book layout (Illustrator/InDesign). PNG is ideal for PowerPoint/Keynote.

Export data

JSON export is useful for revisiting versions of your practice mix decisions.
